Responsibility, Accountability, and Value

When I’m speaking to an audience, I stress the importance of having value in one’s life, and holding oneself responsible to being accountable to that value.  When a person feels down and out, it is usually because they don’t feel worthy of the good things in life, or that those things are unattainable. The reality is that everything that ones desires can be had if they choose to get off their couch and do something about it. No one is going to just hand it over. There is no magic lottery that will bestow you with riches and self-esteem. That’s something we all have to go out and create for ourselves.

 Value

Our lives are a direct relation to how we view it. Everything we think becomes our reality. As Brian Tracy, noted motivational speaker likes to say, “We are what we think about most of the time.” There are many people surrounded by negativity that start to believe that their life has limited value and potential, because someone told them so.  The only person who truly creates value and purpose in your life is you. It doesn’t matter what anyone says or does to you, because you determine your reality. You have the choice to listen to allow their insidious opinions to form your opinions if you choose to. Having faith and believing in yourself has more power and strength than any negativity thrown your way. Remember what we learned in math class. A positive plus a positive equals a positive. A positive plus a negative equals a positive, a negative plus a negative equals a negative. If you choose to see the positives in your life, there isn’t anything than can bring you down.

 Responsibility

If you truly want to be happy, and set yourself on the path of fulfillment and accomplishment, you have to hold yourself accountable to that value. It’s not up to someone else to be responsible for your life. That is completely up to you.  You are the one who determines who you let inside, and make decisions for you. If you aren’t happy with your life, then you have to be the one to do something about it. You can’t wait for someone else to create the opportunity. You can’t hope that someone is going to come along and say the right things, to make you feel better. Life is for the living. If you wish to live your life the way you want, and have the things you want, then you better be responsible to that aim. Remember the saying, “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.”

 Accountability

So now that I have your head turned in the right direction, what are you going to do about it? You can visualize the things you want. You’ve created value, purpose and direction in your life. You’ve made the decision to hold yourself responsible and not rely on others to determine your value. Now you have to put your plan into action. Holding yourself accountable to your goals is the most powerful self-motivating tool that will bring you results, because it requires you to actually do something.  No more sitting around and dreaming up all these wonderful things. You’ve made the decision to do what is necessary to achieve your goal, and not rely on anyone else. This is your life and you are in total control of its outcome. There isn’t anything you can’t have if you’re willing to work for it. We all must earn the things we desire. There are no shortcuts. Hold yourself accountable to being responsible for the value in your life, and you’ll find that any obstacle you face aren’t roadblocks, but mere speed bumps in our path.
