There is never a better time than now to put your big plans into action. Whether you want to ditch your old job for a new one, or start your own business, here are a few pointers that may increase your chances at making your dreams a reality.
Define yourself and what you want.
Define what you’re good at, what you can get paid for realistically by doing what you love to do. Sounds pretty basic doesn’t it? Heard it a thousand times? That’s because it’s true. The things we are good at tend to be the things we love to do. There are enough people out there doing a job they hate just to pay the bills. How more effective could they be if they were doing what they loved, and became efficient at doing it? Ask yourself, “How can my skills be best used, and who will be able to use them?”
Become an expert.
In today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for people who are specialized in certain skills. If someone looked you up online what would they find? Could they define who you are by briefly skimming over your résumé? You must brand yourself on your résumé, on the web, and among your professional network. Separating yourself above the rest will surely make you more attractive to the opportunities you want.
Build strong relationships within your professional network.
You never know where a simple conversation will lead to opportunity. Focus on building 3 to 5 relationships professionally, instead of casually having many. Make time to meet people in your network face to face, as email can seem so impersonal. Work on building a strong relationship with a head hunter and have a strong skill set who knows of your current situation. So when an opportunity comes by their desk, you’ll be one of the first people they consider.
By incorporating some of these elements into your focus, you may just end up with a job you love.
